12-Month Training Program for Arab Board of Psychiatry at Behman Hospital

This program is designed for psychiatry trainees preparing for the Arab Board exam for specialization in Psychiatry. It adheres to the Arab Board of Medical Specializations (ABMS) training program standards and offers a comprehensive clinical experience at the Behman Hospital.

 

The Behman Hospital

 

The Behman Hospital is a leading psychiatric hospital in Cairo, Egypt, and the first private one in the country. It has a long history dating back to 1940, making it the oldest psychiatric facility in Egypt. The Behman offers a comprehensive range of mental health services for adults, with specialties including general psychiatry, addiction treatment, and care for elderly patients. They are known for their team of psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and staff providing excellent care.

 

The Behman Hospital is an accredited training center with the Arab Board of Medical Specializations (ABMS).

Training Program

 

This training program is through observation alongside supervised practice. While trainees will gain valuable insights through observing experienced psychiatrists, the core of the program focuses on providing them with opportunities to:

 

l  Conduct patient evaluations under supervision.

l  Observe various treatment modalities, like psychotherapy techniques and medication management.

l  Attend case conferences, where they can learn from discussing real-world patient cases with the broader team.

l  Shadow registrars during ward rounds and clinic encounters, allowing them to see the application of psychiatric principles in a clinical setting.

 

This supervised practice ensures trainees not only learn the theory but also develop the practical skills necessary for competent psychiatric care. They’ll receive guidance and feedback from experienced professionals.

 

Overall Goals:

     Equip trainees with the knowledge and skills necessary for competent and ethical practice in psychiatry.

     Prepare trainees for successful completion of the Arab Board exam.

     Foster a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

 

Structure:

The program is divided into four 3-month rotations, each focusing on a core area of psychiatry:

     Core Adult Psychiatry I (Months 1-3):

     Inpatient Male department

     Focus: General adult psychiatry, including diagnosis, assessment, treatment planning, and psychopharmacology, ECT indications and observation, acute and emergency psychiatry.

     Activities: Patient evaluations, supportive psychotherapy and psychoeducation training, medication management, case conferences, and attending lectures.

     Core Adult Psychiatry II (Months 4-6):

     Inpatient Ladies Department

     Focus: General adult psychiatry, and women mental health, including diagnosis, assessment, treatment planning, and psychopharmacology, ECT indications and observation, acute and emergency psychiatry.

     Activities: Patient evaluations, supportive psychotherapy and psychoeducation training, medication management, case conferences, and attending lectures.

     Rehabilitation Psychiatry (Months 7-9):

     Inpatient Open Department (Villa)

     Focus: In-depth exploration of specific areas of psychiatry such as addiction, geriatric psychiatry, personality disorders, and cultural psychiatry.

     Activities: Patient evaluations, diagnosis, shared decision making, psychotherapy, case conferences, didactic lectures.

     Specialisation Rotation (Months 10-12):

     Addiction OR Learning Disability

     Focus: Trainees select an area of interest for further exploration and skill development.

     Activities: clinical work under supervision.

Additional Training Components:

     Lectures: Weekly sessions covering core topics in psychiatry, diagnosis, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, ethics, and clinical skills.

     Journal Club: Regular meetings to discuss and critically analyze current research in psychiatry.

     Supervision: Individual and group supervision with experienced psychiatrists throughout the program.

     Case Presentation: In addition to attending the weekly case presentation, the trainee will be offered the opportunity to present a case at the end of each rotation.

     Arab Board Exam Preparation: Dedicated practice with Arab Board graduates and examiners to equip trainees with test-taking strategies and short and long case review.

Evaluation:

     Trainees are expected to maintain a comprehensive logbook documenting their clinical experiences and learning activities.

     Trainee performance will be assessed through written evaluations by supervisors,  participation in discussions, and self-reflection.

     Regular meetings with the hospital academic consultant to monitor progress and address any learning needs.

There are limited training positions.

 

Participants will abide by hospital regulations, local laws and will respect patients’ confidentiality.

 

Fees:

 

For the Academic year of 2024/2025, the fees for this training course is 230,796 EGP for the entire 12 months.
